Sesame is a tall annual (Sesamum indicum) native to Indonesia, India, and Africa. The unhulled seeds are mostly black or golden in colour and off-white when the husk is removed.
Sesame seeds have a mild, nutty aroma and flavour that can be enhanced by toasting. The seeds can be ground to a tahini paste and are an essential ingredient in halva.
